A small dressing can give a simple picnic salad a clear flavour without requiring a collection of bottles at the serving place. Mix a modest amount at home, taste it separately and pack it in a suitable container. Keep the dressing's ingredients known rather than presenting it as an anonymous mixture.

Begin with a small mixture

For a straightforward starting batch, use two tablespoons of olive oil, one tablespoon of wine vinegar and one teaspoon of prepared mustard. Choose products whose ingredients suit the people eating the meal. Read the actual mustard and vinegar labels rather than assuming every version has the same contents.

Put the mustard and vinegar in a small suitable bowl and whisk them together. Add the oil gradually while whisking until the mixture looks combined. This is a simple starting ratio, not a promise that every brand of vinegar or mustard will produce the same flavour.

Taste before adding more

Taste a small amount with a clean utensil, then try a little with the salad ingredient it is meant to accompany. A dressing tasted alone can seem sharper than it does beside the rest of the food. Add a little more oil if that suits the actual combination, or a little more vinegar if a sharper result is wanted.

Season to preference with suitable salt and pepper if desired. Keep additions modest so the small batch does not grow unnecessarily while you adjust it. Use clean utensils and appropriate food handling throughout the preparation.

Match it to the planned salad

Choose the salad before packing the dressing. A simple mixture of suitable prepared leaves and vegetables can allow the dressing to remain the main flavour. If another component already carries a strong dressing or seasoning, decide whether this extra mixture is needed.

Keep the dressing separate until the intended serving stage where that suits the salad and recipe. Follow appropriate food-specific storage and transport guidance for the whole meal. A dressing jar does not make other picnic foods suitable for any length or condition of travel.

Pack the serving detail too

Use a suitable clean food container with its correct secure lid, and carry it appropriately. Keep the ingredient information available for anyone who needs it. Include a suitable serving utensil or another intended dispensing method, rather than relying on everyone to pour from an awkward container.

At the picnic, offer a modest amount first so each person can choose whether more is wanted. Do not return used dressing from plates to the container. Handle any remainder according to appropriate guidance for its ingredients and use. The small batch is useful because it belongs to one actual salad and a clear serving plan, not because every picnic requires homemade condiments.
